Tripura is the third smallest state in India and covers an area of 10,486 sq.km. It is multi racial and multi religious. The state has 19 tribes, and it is an eco-friendly and pollution-free state. In the year 1949, it became a part of independent India.

The languages that are mainly spoken in this state are Kokborok and Bengali.

North East India General Mission has planted churches among Mizos at Tripura. New Zealand Baptist Missionary Society worked among the Kukis. Tripura Baptist Christian Union was founded in 1939. Most Churches and Christians of all tribes are associated with this Union. The Baptists, Presbyterians and Catholics are the main denominations. Non-tribal attitude to Christianity and low literacy among the responsive tribes are the obstacles for the Church growth. Christian missions are putting their efforts on tribes. Educated recognize the definite difference in following Christ. Churches are growing in the midst of obstacles.

The most important indigenous people are Tripuris, Jamatias, Chakmas, Halams, Notias, and Riangs. Nepali, Oraon, Munda, and Santal are other groups. Christianity is received favorably particularly by the tribes.
